Abstract
Some
lies
appear
to be
important
and
necessary
in
order
to
maintain
healthy
social
relationships
(DePaulo
&
Kashy
,
1998
;
Hancock
,
Thom-Santelli
,
&Ritchie
,
2004)
.
Lies
do
not
appear
to have a
distinct
label
but
rather
fall
on a
continuum
with
condemnable
lies
and
acceptable
lies
(Rycyna
,
Champion
,
&
Kelly
,
2009)
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
test
whether
lying
,
self-concealment
and
authenticity
in
relationships
would
mediate
the
relationships
between
personal
authenticity
,
self-consciousness
, and
social
desirability
with
relationship
closeness
such
that
participants
higher
in
social
desirability
and
self
consciousness
and
lower
in
authenticity
would be
more
likely
to be
deceptive
,
which
would
prevent
closeness
in
friendships
and
romantic
relationships
.
Participants
who
were
more
highly
authentic
with
themselves
, and were
lower
in
social
desirability
and
self-consciousness
would be
more
likely
to
tell
the
truth
and
conceal
less
, and be
more
authentic
in their
relationships
which
would
foster
closeness
in their
friendships
and
romantic
relationships
. A
sample
of
114
college
students
from
Central
Connecticut
State
University
completed
the
questionnaires
on the
online
SONA
system
and
received
course
credit
for their
participation
. To
measure
lying
,
Cole's
Lying
Measure
(Cole
,
2001)
was
used
for
both
romantic
and
friendship
relationships
. The
Self-Concealment
Scale
(Larson
&
Chastain
,
1990)
measured
self-
concealment
, and the
Authenticity
in
Relationships
Scale
(Lopez
&
Rice
,
2006)
measured
authenticity
in
romantic
and
friendship
relationships
. The
Relationship
Closeness
Inventory
(Berscheid
,
Snyder
&
Omoto
,
et
al.
,
1989)
measured
closeness
for
both
romantic
and
friendship
relationships
, the
Marlowe-Crowne's
Social
Desirability
Scale
(Crowne
&
Marlowe
,
1960)
measured
social
desirability
, and the
Public
,
Private
Self-Consciousness
Scale
(Fenigstein
,
Scheier
&
Buss
,
et
al.
,
1975)
measured
self-consciousness
. The
Authenticity
Inventory
(Kernis
&
Goldman
,
et
al.
,
2006)
measured
authenticity
in
self
.
Results
revealed
that the
only
variable
significantly
correlated
with
closeness
in a
romantic
relationship
was
authenticity
in
romantic
relationships
,
indicating
those
who
were
more
authentic
with their
romantic
partner
were
likely
to have
closer
romantic
relationships
than those
lower
in
relationship
authenticity
.
Multiple
regression
analyses
indicated
as
expected
, those
who
had
higher
authenticity
scores
concealed
less
and were
more
authentic
in their
relationships
.
Participants
with
higher
self
consciousness
concealed
more
and
participants
with
higher
social
desirability
were
found
to be
less
authentic
in
relationships
. The
only
factor
in this
study
that was
found
to be
related
to
closeness
in a
romantic
relationship
was
authenticity
in
romantic
relationships
.
