Abstract
The
1970s
and
1980s
in
Latin
America
were
filled
with
political
instability
and
civil
wars
that
prompted
the
United
States
to
make
this
area
a
focus
of its
foreign
policy
.
One
major
motivation
for the
U.S
. was its
immense
fear
of
communism
entering
the
Western
Hemisphere
as
it
had
already
afflicted
the
Caribbean
through
Cuba
. The
domino
effect
occurring
in
Asia
is
what the
U.S
.
wanted
to
avoid
in
all
of
Latin
America
.
It
was for
mainly
this
reason
that
U.S
.
intervention
increased
throughout
Latin
America
,
especially
in
countries
such
as
Nicaragua
,
where
the
U.S
.
felt
communism
would
easily
enter
because
of its
relations
with
Cuba
and the
Soviet
Union
.
United
States
intervention
became
a
greater
force
throughout
the
1970s
when
the
Sandinistas
became
more
of a
threat
in their
attempt
to
overthrow
the
Somoza
Regime
and in the
1980s
,
throughout
the
Sandinista
government
. The
main
opposition
to the
Sandinista
party
was the
belief
that their
plans
and
goals
for
Nicaragua
were
communist
based
,
which
the
U.S
.
feared
.
Exploring
the
various
definitions
of the
term
terrorism
and how they
apply
to the
events
that
occurred
throughout
the
1980s
during
the
Sandinista
government
will be a
major
theme
in this
thesis
.
It
has
become
increasingly
difficult
to
come
to a
single
definition
of the
term
because
it
has
evolved
through
time
.
Acts
that
occurred
throughout
this
time
period
by the
U.S
.
backed
Contras
have been
labeled
terrorism
.
