Abstract
The
purpose
of this
project
is
to
determine
if the
use
of
mathematics
journals
increases
student
understanding
of
particular
mathematics
topics
.
Research
has
shown
that
when
students
write
down
what they have
learned
, they
better
understand
the
material
(Pugalee
2001
;
Lim
&
Pugalee
,
2004
;
Fello
&
Paquette
2009)
. This
study
was
designed
to
determine
that this
is
true
for
fourth
grade
. The
treatment
group
used
mathematics
journals
every
day
for a
period
of
two
months
at the
end
of
each
mathematics
lesson
. They
wrote
what was
taught
in the
lesson
in their
own
words
. The
control
group
did
not
use
the
mathematics
journals
. At the
end
of the
five
month
period
of
time
, the
students
were
tested
to
see
how
much
progress
was
made
.
