Abstract
Shortly
after
World
War
I
,
American
Progressives
quickly
developed
a
fondness
for
all
things
Soviet
, and
assumed
a
dominant
role
in
explaining
,
promoting
and
advancing
the
Bolshevik
cause
. They were
often
prominent
and
well
known
, and
included
journalists
,
authors
,
film
industry
professionals
and
American
politicians
. These
often
intellectual
and
prominently
situated
individuals
repeatedly
minimized
the
horrors
of the
Soviet
regime
believing
that the
eventual
success
of the
Soviet
experiment
was
worth
overlooking
some
temporary
acts
of
brutality
.
During
the
time
period
after
World
War
I
and
before
the
end
of
World
War
II
,
Progressives
were
successfully
able
to
distort
much
of the
news
coming
out
of the
Soviet
Union
in
order
to
influence
and
sway
public
opinion
, as
well
as
policy
,
within
the
Roosevelt
Administration
regarding
the
Soviet
regime
. The
major
aim
of this
study
was to
evaluate
the
extent
and
success
of the
American
Progressive
movement
in
forming
United
States
governmental
policy
in
relation
to the
Soviet
Union
.
Research
in this
topic
was
conducted
by
examining
original
documents
and
government
papers
,
newspaper
and
other
publications
,
books
and
movies
produced
during
this
time
period
and
other
scholarly
works
and
articles
. This
study
demonstrates
that the
Progressive
Movement
had a
major
impact
on the
formation
of
American
policy
towards
the
Soviet
Union
and its
leaders
,
greatly
affected
American-Soviet
relations
and
set
the
stage
for the
critical
alliances
of
World
War
II
and
post-war
agreements
.
