Abstract
This
research
focused
on
improving
instruction
in the
area
of
mathematical
problem
solving
at the
elementary
level
. The
fourth
grade
participants
in the
study
were
chosen
based
on
random
selection
.
All
students
were
given
the
same
district
assessment
as a
pretest
to
compare
ability
levels
. The
students
in the
study
were
separated
into
two
groups
. The
control
group
received
no
explicit
instruction
on
responding
to
mathematical
word
problems
. The
experimental
group
received
explicit
instruction
on
responding
to
mathematical
word
problems
. The
teacher
of this
group
used
the
twelve
notions
of
mathematical
operations
and
collaborative
grouping
where
students
could
communicate
solutions
.
Students
were
taught
to
identify
the
structure
of a
mathematical
word
problem
through
a
problemsolving
workshop
type
model
.
After
twelve
weeks
of
instruction
,
students
were
tested
as
individuals
with a
twelvequestion
posttest
. The
same
assessment
was
given
to
all
students
in the
study
. The
results
of the
assessment
of the
two
groups
were
analyzed
to
determine
if
teaching
through
the
twelve
notions
,
using
word
problems
that
connect
to the
real
world
, has an
effect
on
student
responses
to the
mathematical
word
problems
. The
mean
test
score
of the
control
group
was
compared
to the
mean
score
of the
experimental
group
. To
see
if a
significant
growth
exists
in
each
classroom
, the
researcher
compared
the
means
of the
pre
and
posttests
. The
information
obtained
from this
study
will be
beneficial
to
help
guide
further
research
and
inform
elementary
teachers
of the
best
practice
for
instruction
of the
four
mathematical
operations
used
to
solve
mathematical
word
problems
with
meaning
.
