Abstract
Grade
12
student
participation
in the
National
Assessment
of
Educational
Progress
(NAEP)
is
a
perennial
problem
. This
study
uses
logistic
regression
on
archival
data
from the
2009
Grade
12
State
NAEP
administration
in
Connecticut
to
examine
whether
student
non-participation
in
NAEP
was
predictable
based
on
student
variables
(achievement
and
attendance)
and
school
variables
(school
size
and
efforts
to
encourage
participation)
. The
analysis
showed
that the
predictor
variables
used
accounted
for a
statistically
significant
but
small
amount
of
variance
in
NAEP
participation
.
Additionally
, the
results
provide
evidence
that a
representative
sample
of
Connecticut
students
participated
in
NAEP
2009
,
suggesting
that
student
non-participation
was
unlikely
to have
compromised
the
validity
of
results
. The
discussion
includes
recommendations
for
increasing
participation
rates
.
