Abstract
Many
Americans
engage
in
counterproductive
work
behaviors
,
i.e.
,
actions
by the
employee
which
may
undermine
the
legitimate
interests
of the
organization
. On a
national
scale
these
behaviors
lead
to
millions
of
dollars
in
lost
productivity
.
Consequently
,
understanding
and
dealing
with
counterproductive
work
behaviors
is
a
major
concern
for
almost
all
organizations
. The
study
examined
the
influence
of
several
individual
characteristics
which
are
believed
to
contribute
to
counterproductive
behaviors—positive
and
negative
affectivity
,
job
satisfaction
and
work
stress
. The
study
used
a
convenience
sample
of
60
workers
in
southern
CT
who
completed
an
online
survey
.
Participants
completed
psychological
measures
that
assess
affectivity
,
job
satisfaction
,
work
stress
and
counterproductive
work
behaviors
. The
specific
hypotheses
of this
study
were:
(1)
high
positive
affect
would be
associated
with
less
counterproductive
work
behaviors
,
while
(2)
high
negative
affect
would be
associated
with
more
counterproductive
work
behaviors
;
(3)
job
satisfaction
and
work
stress
would
serve
as
mediators
between
affect
and
counterproductive
work
behaviors
. As
predicted
, the
study
found
that
high
positive
affect
was
associated
with
less
counterproductive
work
behaviors
and
high
negative
affect
predicted
more
counterproductive
work
behaviors
. The
study
also
found
that
neither
component
of
work
stress
acts
a
mediator
for
negative
affect
, but
organizational
stress
acts
a
partial
mediator
for
positive
affect
.
Job
satisfaction
acts
as a
partial
mediator
between
both
positive
and
negative
affect
and
counterproductive
work
behaviors
. The
implications
of these
results
are
discussed
.
