Abstract
The
object
of this
study
is
the
restoration
to the
public
memory
of the
revolutionary
United
States
Ship
(USS)
Monitor
.
It
follows
the
history
of the
vessel
from
inception
to
destruction
and on to its
recent
discovery
utilizing
the
works
of
contemporary
and
modern
historians
,
scientists
, and
intellectuals
. The
construct
and
shaping
of the
initial
public
memory
is
explored
by
investigation
of the
impact
of the
vessel’s
life
on the
culture
,
arts
,
politics
and
subsequent
events
of the
early
Civil
War
era
.
My
study
illustrates
the
contemporary
aspect
of the
vessel
from the
perspective
of those that
manned
her and those
intellects
that
observed
her
perceptively
. The
vessel
was the
embodiment
of the
transformation
of
seamanship
from
sail
to
machine
and from
man’s
control
to
subservience
.
Academics
led
the
way
to the
discovery
of the
wreck
of the
USS
Monitor
and its
destiny
stimulating
the
government
to
take
an
enlightened
leadership
position
which
enables
public
historians
and
marine
arche
