Notes
Dietary
restraint
is
defined
as the
conscious
restriction
of
food
intake
with the
intention
of
weight
control
.
Research
has
shown
that
emotions
can
have an
effect
on
eating
behavior
in
restrained
and
unrestrained
individuals
.
Studies
have
reported
an
association
between
dietary
restraint
,
body
dissatisfaction
, and
eating
problems
.
However
, to
date
, the
results
are
equivocal
. The
purpose
of the
present
study
is
threefold
.
First
, to
examine
the
relationships
between
dietary
restraint
and
psychological
well-being
.
Second
, to
determine
the
relationships
between
dietary
restraint
and
body
dissatisfaction
.
Third
, to
determine
whether
a
relationship
occurs
between
men
and
women
in
regard
to
dietary
restraint
and
body
dissatisfaction
. The
results
did
not
reveal
any
significant
differences
between
men
and
women
on
all
the
psychological
measures
administrated
.
Further
, the
results
showed
that
low
restrainers
had
significantly
lower
scores
on the
body
satisfaction
scale
than
high
restrainers
. A
significant
positive
correlation
was
found
between
body
dissatisfaction
and
several
dimensions
on the
Brief
Symptom
Inventory
.
Problems
with
body
dissatisfaction
and
eating
control
should be
considered
when
addressing
psychological
need
and
therapeutic
intervention
of the
obese
population
. The
results
are
discussed
in
terms
of
helping
dieters
approach
their
eating
problems
and
body
satisfaction
issues
.
