Abstract
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
develop
and
implement
teaching
methods
to
build
fluency
in
struggling
readers
and to
generate
hypotheses
regarding
the
impact
that
music
has in
helping
to
build
fluent
oral
reading
.
Methods
using
music
to
promote
fluency
were
developed
,
refined
and
implemented
every
other
week
for a
three-month
span
of
time
in
one
second
grade
classroom
in a
suburban
New
England
elementary
school
.
Multiple
data
sources
were
collected
including
field
notes
on
lessons
,
pre
and
post
fluency
assessments
,
audiotaped
recordings
,
student
self-assessments
, and
parent
evaluations
.
Data
sources
were
analyzed
for
low
,
average
and
medium
performing
students
within
the
case
study
class
.
Additionally
,
pre
and
post
assessment
scores
on
word
recognition
reading
connected
texts
using
the
Developmental
Reading
Assessment
(Joetta
Beaver)
were
compared
by
performance
levels
across
six
second
grade
classrooms
at the
school
. The
results
of the
study
include
data
to
support
the
following
hypotheses
:
1)
Music
may
impact
the
rapid
automatic
naming
found
in
struggling
readers
and
help
to
make
them
more
fluent
readers
2)
Music
may
have
some
impact
on
building
fluency
by
improving
intonation
,
sight
word
recognition
and
phrasing
3)
Music
used
during
reading
instruction
appears
to
improve
reading
differentially
across
performance
levels
.
4)
A
balance
of
methods
would
best
benefit
all
students
and their
varying
abilities
and
reading
levels
.
Effective
methods
included
:
chorally
rereading
of
music
,
choral
reading
with
kinesthetic
components
,
word
play
and
word
substitution
,
collaborative
building
of
additional
verses
.
Struggling
readers
appear
to
benefit
from
simple
melodies
,
choral
reading
using
movement
, and
word
play
. This
study
has
implications
for
further
study
to
refine
our
understanding
of
music
as a
tool
to
support
the
development
of
reading
fluency
of
children
at
various
performance
levels
.
