Abstract
To
meet
the
requirements
stated
for
completion
of the
Master's
program
in
Technology
Education
at
Central
Connecticut
State
University
,
I
will
develop
a
competition
, a
working
vehicle
, and a
curriculum
to
promote
Transportation
Technology
in the
secondary
school
setting
. The
topic
of
Transportation
Technology
has been
neglected
in the
field
of
Technology
Education
when
compared
to
other
topics
such
as
communication
and
production
. In
1991
,
Dugger
,
French
,
Peckham
, and
Starkweather
reported
that
transportation
courses
accounted
for
14.8%
of
Technology
Education
courses
while
communication
and
production
accounted
for
21.3%
of the
course
total
respectively
.
Since
transportation
is
an
integral
tool
to
both
communication
and
production
, the
subject
must
be
expanded
,
studied
, and
critiqued
within
the
secondary
school
system
. In
organizing
the
topic
of
transportation
for
secondary
education
utilizing
the
Illinois
State
Transportation
Technology
taxonomy
,
I
plan
to
create
a
curriculum
that
exposes
students
to
three
of the
sub
categories
of
Transportation
Technology
. These
include
1)
resources
,
2)
technical
processes
, and
3)
technological
impacts
of
transportation
.
Areas
of
study
to be
focused
on
under
these
sub
areas
will
include
power
sources
,
human
sources
,
transportation
media
,
propulsion
systems
,
control
systems
,
societal
and
environmental
impacts
. The
application
of
principles
,
concepts
, and
scientific
knowledge
is
integral
and
imperative
when
studying
Transportation
Technology
. With this in
mind
, the
construction
of a
vehicle
involving
the
learned
topics
is
the
next
logical
step
in the
study
of
transportation
.
I
will
design
a
format
where
students
would
build
a
transportation
vehicle
that would
follow
specific
dimensions
and
assigned
criteria
to
compete
in a
local
,
state
, or
national
competition
. The
competition
would
forge
all
study
,
discussion
, and
manipulative
skills
performed
during
the
class
duration
into a
cohesive
unit
. The
final
piece
to the
Master's
project
will be the
construction
of a
sample
competition
vehicle
to
serve
as a
visual
and
inspirational
tool
to
initiate
a
growth
of
ideas
among
the
faculty
and
students
when
pursuing
study
in
Transportation
Technology
.
Developing
a
competition
,
curriculum
, and
sample
vehicle
that will
promote
and
expand
the
study
of
Transportation
Technology
at the
secondary
school
level
will be the
three
parts
of
my
project
to
fulfill
the
requirements
necessary
to
complete
the
Master's
degree
in
Technology
Education
at
Central
Connecticut
State
University
.
