Abstract
The
on-going
effort
to
discover
'what
works
' in
evidence
based
practices
has
led
many
researchers
to
explore
the
probation
officer
--
probationer
relationship
. The
notion
that this
relationship
is
an
important
aspect
to a
successful
probation
experience
has
prompted
many
criminal
justice
agencies
to
utilize
such
practices
as
motivational
interviewing
and
expose
staff
to the
appropriate
training
to
effectively
administer
these
relationship
building
techniques
. The
State
of
Connecticut's
probation
agency
,
Court
Support
Services
Division
,
is
one
such
agency
that
requires
their
staff
to be
trained
in
motivational
interviewing
. The
agency
emphasizes
the
importance
of the
probation
officer-probationer
relationship
in
building
a
successful
probation
experience
for
probationers
. This
study
explores
probationer
satisfaction
with their
probation
officer
and
probation
experience
through
the
use
of an
anonymous
survey
administered
to
probationers
in
probation
agency
waiting
rooms
. The
survey
also
explores
the
existence
of an
association
between
the
probation
officer/probationer
relationship
and the
probationers
'
perception
of the
helpfulness
of
probation
. The
study
did
find
a
positive
associative
relationship
. The
study
also
discusses
the
results
of
each
independent
survey
item
and an
overall
strength
of the
relationship
between
probation
officer
and
probationer
. The
study
results
suggest
that there
is
a
high
satisfaction
level
amongst
probationers
and the
study
results
also
suggest
that there
exists
a
strong
correlation
between
probationer
perception
of the
helpfulness
of
probation
and their
relationship
with their
probation
officer
.
