The
Effect

NCTM
Standards-Based
Curriculum
on

One
of the
major
goals
of
high
school
curriculum
is
to
better
prepare
the
high
school
student
for
college
level
courses
.
When
alternative
curricula
programs
are
available
, how
can
one
determine
which
curriculum
better
accomplishes
this
goal
?
One
of the
major
goals
of a
college
or
university
is
to
determine
whether
a
high
school
student
will
succeed
in
college
level
courses
. To
determine
this,
some
predictors
are
available
.
Among
these
predictors
are the
Scholastic
Aptitude
Test
(SAT)
,
High
School
Grade
Point
Average
, and
High
School
Class
Rank
.
When
so
many
alternatives
are
available
,
it
is
difficult
to
determine
if
one
is
more
reliable
than
another
. A
unique
opportunity
arose
when
forty-eight
students
from the
same
high
school
were
accepted
and
attended
a
particular
university
.
Some
of the
high
school
students
were
taught
mathematics
based
on the
NCTM
Standards-based
curriculum
program
(Math
Connections)
;
others
,
under
the
more
traditional
curriculum
; and
still
others
under
both
an
NCTM
Standards-based
curriculum
and a
traditional
curriculum
.
All
had
taken
the
Scholastic
Aptitude
Test
and the
Connecticut
Academic
Performance
Test
(CAPT)
.
Most
had
taken
the
University's
Accuplacer
Test
(mathematics
placement
exam)
and
completed
one
semester
of
appropriate
college
mathematics
'
courses
. The
purpose
of the
study
was:
1
. To
determine
whether
there was any
evidence
to
show
that
either
the
NCTM
Standards-based
curriculum
or a
more
traditional
curriculum
better
prepare
students
for
college
level
mathematics
courses
, and
2
. To
determine
how
well
the
various
predictors
'
predict
students
'
success
on the
Accuplacer
test
. The
study
examined
the
relationship
between
weighted
mathematics
average
,
high
school
class
rank
,
SAT
mathematics
score
,
CAPT
mathematics
score
,
Accuplacer
score
, and
college
,
Elementary
Algebra
grades
.
It
was
hypothesized
that there would be
differences
among
the
curricular
groups
. The
study
also
examined
which
predictors
are
better
for
predicting
success
on the
Accuplacer
test
and
college
mathematics
course
grade
.
It
was
hypothesized
that
students
who
completed
an
NCTM
Standards-based
curriculum
would
do
well
in
mathematics
courses
taken
at the
university
. The
predicted
hypotheses
that there would be
differences
between
the
three
groups
on the
various
predictors
were
all
confirmed
except
for the
Accuplacer
score
. There was a
statistically
significant
difference
between
the
three
groups
. The
best
predictors
for the
Accuplacer
test
were the
CAPT
test
and the
curricular
program
completed
. The
best
predictor
for
success
in
college
mathematics
course
was
high
school
weighted
average
.
