Title
Richard
Wagner's
presence
in
some
literary
works
of
Alejo
Carpentier
.

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Abstract
This
thesis
explores
ways
in
which
the
influence
of
composer
Richard
Wagner
is
manifested
in
various
writings
of
Alejo
Carpentier
. This
study
is
based
on the
hypothesis
that the
theories
of the
composer
serve
as
reference
to
Carpentier
for the
creation
of his
own
work
,
especially
in his
conception
of the
Latin
American
novel
of the
mid
20th
century
. The
first
half
of this
thesis
intends
to
familiarize
the
reader
with the
figure
of
Wagner
and the
way
in
which
his
influence
appears
in the
literature
of
Carpentier
. In the
first
chapter
, an
historic
vision
of
Wagner's
life
and his
production
is
offered
. As
well
,
some
of his
most
important
theories
are
presented
and
some
of the
parallels
with the
work
of
Carpentier
are
indicated
. The
second
chapter
discusses
the
influence
of the
German
musician
in the
literature
. The
chapter
begins
by
defining
the
term
'
Wagnerian
patterns
'
introduced
by the
English
critic
John
Louis
DiGaetani
in his
book
Wagner
and the
Modern
British
Novel
. This
term
gives
reference
to
all
those
allusions
,
themes
,
images
and
symbols
associated
with
Wagner
and his
creations
. In the
second
half
,
Wagnerian
patterns
are
evident
in
some
of
Carpentier's
works
.
Chapters
three
and
four
emphasize
,
respectively
, the
presence
of
Wagner
in
Carpentier's
essays
and in
two
of his
novels
.
Through
this
study
,
Carpentier
discovers
in the
German
music
of
Wagner's
time
a
model
which
help
him
understand
the
crisis
of the
Latin
American
novel
in his
own
time
.
Carpentier
, as
Wagner
,
reflects
on the
social
function
of the
artists
and on their
need
to
give
their
creations
not a
regional
character
but a
universal
character
.
