Wiknik

Description
Interview
conducted
by
Shane
Matthews
.
Arthur
Wiknik
Jr
. was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1968
. He was
assigned
to an
infantry
unit
, and was
chosen
to
go
to
Non-commissioned
Officer
Candidate
School
. He
went
to
Vietnam
as a
Sergeant
.
Because
of the
short
amount
of
time
that
Wiknik
was in the
army
, he was
known
as an
“instant
NCO”
, and
when
he
arrived
in
Vietnam
,
some
of the
men
and
fellow
officers
were
less
than
enthusiastic
about
having
him as their
squad
leader
at
first
.
After
a
month
in
country
,
Wiknik
had not
experienced
any
combat
situations
,
when
his
platoon
was
sent
to the A
Shau
Valley
, to
back
up
another
platoon
. The
platoon
was
dropped
off
in a
valley
under
heavy
sniper
fire
. But
it
wasn’t
until
two
chaplains
were
dropped
off
with the
platoon
that the
men
became
suspicious
.
When
they
noticed
there was a
two
star
general
present
the
men
became
even
more
nervous
. As
it
turned
out
Wiknik’s
platoon
was the
back
up
for the
battle
of
Hamburger
Hill
,
one
of the
most
significant
battles
of the
Vietnam
War
.
Wiknik
describes
in
detail
what he
underwent
during
the
battle
.
After
the
battle
the
platoon
stayed
in the A
Shau
Valley
,
where
they
rotated
doing
patrols
of the
jungle
, and
maintaining
the
firebase
.
After
a
year
in
country
,
Wiknik
was
discharged
and
sent
home
to
Connecticut
.
When
he
arrived
at
Bradley
Intl
.
Airport
, he was
saddened
to
find
that
people
would not
sit
next
to him
because
he was
wearing
his
uniform
.
While
in
Vietnam
, he was
unaware
of the
turmoil
within
the
U.S.
, and how
troops
arriving
home
from the
war
were
treated
.
Wiknik’s
book
about
his
experiences
in
Vietnam
,
“Nam
Sense”
was
published
in
2005
.
