.
JoelPatrick

.
Army
two
weeks
before
his
18th
birthday
, in
December
of
1997
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
August
of
1998
,
after
graduation
from
high
school
, at
Fort
Jackson
(SC)
" He then
transferred
to
Fort
Eustis
(VA)
for
advanced
training
,
where
he
learned
how to
fix
and
maintain
Black
Hawk
helicopters
.
After
his
training
,
which
consisted
of
mainly
classroom
training
, he was
transferred
to
Hunter
Army

Savannah
,
GA
,
where
he
worked
on

,
2nd

.
Leger
switched
his
job
to
flight
duty
, and
became
crew
chief
on a
Black
Hawk
crew
. His
job
as
crew
chief
was to
navigate
,
calculate
fuel
consumption
, and
do
surveillance
. The
crew
was
responsible
for
detecting
suspicious
activity
around
the
Bahamas
,
among
other
things
. In
March
of
2001
,
Leger
was
stationed
in
South
Korea
at
Camp
Stanley
. The
Black
Hawk
crew
had
similar
surveillance
duties
in
Korea
as they had at
Hunter
Airfield
.
Leger
was
stationed
in
Korea
during
the
bombings
of
September
11th
, and at the
time
they
thought
it
may
be
rumors
to

, a
week
later
they
learned
what
actually
happened
.
When
Leger
returned
to the
United

Regiment
,
101st
Airborne
Division
. He was
eating
lunch
with
some
friends
one
afternoon
,
while
stationed
at
Fort
Campbell
,
when
they
learned
that the
101st
Division
would be
deployed
to
Iraq
. They
learned
the
information
by
watching
CNN
,
where
it
was
listed
on the
bottom
ticker
. In
February
of
2003
, he was
deployed
to
Iraq
,
where
he would
fly
transport
missions
as a
Black
Hawk
crew
chief
. The
crew
arrived
in
Kuwait
via
commercial
airplane
. On
missions
the
crew
was
always
fired
upon
,
which
created
tense
situations
.
Leger
flew
in
Iraq
for a
year
before
returning
to the
United
States
,
where
he was
stationed
at
Fort
Campbell
for his
remaining
four
months
of
service
. He was
discharged
in
August
of
2004
, and
returned
to
Connecticut
where
he
began
school
at
CCSU
just
a
few
weeks
later
. He
is
working
towards
earning
a
B.S
. in
History
Education
, and
hopes
to
teach
History
at the
high
school
level
upon
graduation
.
Leger
also
joined
the
VFW
