Notes	One of the fundamental physical aspects of rocky intertidal habitats deals with wave exposure (as defined by fetch) and the impact it has on the quantity and diversity of intertidal organisms. This paper examined the rocky intertidal environment (to include algae and animal organisms), at Outer Island in the Thimble Islands off of the coast of Connecticut and part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, by establishing eight transects with varying wave exposures. This survey took place in the July to November 2005 timeframe and consisted of recording vertical elevations, and recording the community composition of organisms in a 0.5 meter quadrat frame, and then imaging each frame for each of the eight transects which ranged from 11.4 meters to 31.5 meters in length and each of varying slope. In the analysis phase, each transect was textually and graphically described beginning from the Mean Low Water line. This was followed by comparisons made of the diversity at each transect (or the total number of dominant species quantity present), and what was called the Total % C.U.C. Cover, which was the Canopy, Understory and (Ground) Cover of each quadrat frame, as measured as a total percentage. Findings concluded that from an Exposed (in this case 30.0 km of fetch) to a Sheltered (0.2 km of fetch) condition diversity (dominant species quantity) was substantially different, 11-12 species evident versus 7-9 species present respectively. At the same time Total % C.U.C. Cover did not seem to vary that much from 3144-2806 Total % C.U.C. Cover for the Exposed location to 3154-2759 Total % C.U.C. Cover for a Sheltered location. Linear regressions performed using Total % C.U.C. Cover to Fetch (as the Independent variable) with all eight transects from 30.8 km to 0.19 km had a very low Coefficient of Determination and therefore was not significant. However when examined using Fetch (as the Independent variable) and Total % C.U.C. Cover as the Dependant variable with Transects B1-D2 and 7.8 km to 0.19 km respectively, suggesting that Total % C.U.C. Cover are related. Subsequently linear regressions performed using Dominant Species Quantity to Slope (as the Independent variable) with all eight transects again resulted in no significance. However when the longest Fetch distances of A1 and A2 were removed, a high Coefficient of Determination resulted. Examining the relationship between Slope and Total % C.U.C. Cover using all eight transects resulted in an inverse relationship, namely that as slope increases, Total % C.U.C. Cover decreases, with a much higher Coefficient of Determination than before. Using multiple regressions, the study found that relative to wave exposure as defined by fetch and slope of the shoreline, that the two physical variables combined were excellent explanatory variables (that is that there were very high Coefficients of Determination) for both Total % CUC Cover and Dominant Species Quantity, suggesting that there may be a causal relationship between wave fetch and slope, and Total % C.U.C. Cover and Dominant Species Quantity. Finally examining the relationship of vertical elevation to Total % C.U.C. Cover there are very high Coefficients of Determination for Transect A1, which has the longest Fetch of 30.8 km, indicating that this transect is the one where most of the variability in y can be explained by the vertical elevation as primarily a function of the longer areas of wave exposure (fetch).
